Is Figure AI a good place to work?
Researched October 2026 · 30 sourcesMostly. Figure AI is a heavily funded humanoid maker that posts clear hourly rates and shifts for its operator and data roles, but the jobs are fixed-term or contract-to-hire, physically hard, and its robot safety is disputed in court. The job is temporary and physical: six-month terms or contract-to-hire with no promised conversion, 8+ hours on your feet, and an unresolved suit by its ex-safety head alleging a malfunctioning robot nearly hit an employee. It pays $30–$65/hr in most of its live listings (median $30/hr).
Actively hiring, pay independently measured from its live feedFigure AI Inc. is a private Delaware firm in San Jose, California, founded in 2022 by CEO Brett Adcock. In September 2025 it raised over $1 billion, led by Parkway Venture Capital, at a $39 billion value. In June 2026 Adcock posted that its robots, about 740, now outnumber its roughly 650 staff. Its robots work for customers such as BMW (Spartanburg) and Catalyst Brands (Reno); operators run them, and pilots and data creators record data for its Helix AI.
Operators are contract-to-hire (aiming at full-time); pilots, data creators and quality analysts get six-month fixed terms, all hourly. Each posting states its hourly rate. None names an agency or lists benefits (shared at offer); Figure's HR ad mentions agency staff, so ask who employs you. Shifts: 8.5 hours, 5 days with a weekend day.
Glassdoor 4.3/5 (8 reviews) · Blind 2.0/5 (1 review). Read October 2026.
10 open roles on Figure AI, independently checked 1 Nov 2026.
On-site in the US: at Figure's San Jose, California headquarters, where most operator shifts are, and at commercial sites such as Reno, Nevada and Los Angeles. Not a work-from-home role.
What people praise
- Glassdoor's small sample is positive: 83% recommend Figure and 83% approve of CEO Brett Adcock (figures as shown in search results).
- A reviewer (Glassdoor, January 2026, 5 stars) called management excellent, with no micromanagement and roadblocks cleared when you bring data to back the case.
- The Pilot role asks for no degree or robotics background (robot experience is only a bonus), and Figure calls it an entry point into robotics, with paths to Senior Pilot and lead roles.
What people complain about
- A software engineer (Glassdoor, November 2025, 1 star) titled the review "Horrible Company", citing late hours and a toxic environment.
- A software engineer on Blind (March 2025) described a hustle culture with long hours, politics, inexperienced managers and a constant push for demos tied to the CEO's social media posts.
- Operator shifts are physical: standing 8+ hours, lifting up to 50 lbs, frequent bending, and a 5-day week with a mandatory weekend shift. The night shift runs 10:30 PM to 7 AM.
- We could not read any review by an operator, pilot or data creator; the Figure AI reviews we could read were by engineers and a recruiter, so the floor jobs lack an independent account.
What has gone wrong
- November 2025. Former head of product safety Robert Gruendel sued (Gruendel v. Figure AI, N.D. Cal. 5:25-cv-10094), alleging he was fired in September 2025 after warning that its robots could fracture a skull, that one malfunctioned and punched a fridge beside an employee, and that an emergency-stop certification was dropped. These are allegations.
- August 2026. Figure calls the claims falsehoods and says he was fired for poor performance; in January 2026 it counter-sued, alleging he copied confidential files. Nothing has been decided: in August 2026 the parties agreed to private mediation, fact discovery closes November 14, 2026, and a trial-setting conference is set for December 3, 2026.
- April 2025. Fortune questioned Adcock's claim of a robot fleet doing end-to-end operations at BMW's South Carolina plant; BMW said one Figure robot worked there at a time, on a single parts-loading task. Figure later said its robots ran 10-hour weekday shifts there for 11 months and helped build over 30,000 cars.
- August 2026. Figure is sourcing training data far beyond its US staff. It is opening data creator units in Mexico City and Sao Paulo with 24/7 rotating shifts, and in August 2026 launched Index, an app paying people in 100+ countries to film tasks at home or work; it says it will spend over $1 billion on data and compute in a year.
Best for: People near San Jose, Los Angeles, Fontana or Reno who can stand 8+ hours, lift 50 lbs and work nights or a weekend day, want a hands-on start in robotics, and accept a fixed term with a chance of conversion. Not for: Anyone who needs a permanent or remote job, needs every weekend off, cannot stand all shift or lift 50 lbs, lacks a clean driving record for site roles, or is uneasy working beside powerful prototype robots.

How to get started on Figure AI
Researched September 2026Apply to a Humanoid Robot Operator, Humanoid Robot Pilot or commercial-site operator opening directly on Figure's Greenhouse board, pass a recruiter screen and interview, and if hired you start as an hourly, on-site worker (contract-to-hire for operators, a six-month fixed term for pilots) who trains at headquarters and then runs or teleoperates Figure's humanoid robots to test behaviors and collect the data that trains its Helix model.
Who can join
- Available for full-time, fully on-site shift work. The San Jose operator postings run fixed shifts (morning 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, afternoon 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM, night 10:30 PM to 7:00 AM) on a five-day week that includes a mandatory weekend shift.
- Able to stand and move for an entire 8+ hour shift, bend, reach and handle robot hardware, and lift, carry and maneuver equipment or humanoid hardware up to 50 lbs on your own.
- For the Humanoid Robot Operator shifts, experience working with robots or troubleshooting mechanical systems is listed as a requirement, along with clear communication and sustained focus.
- For the Humanoid Robot Pilot role, physical coordination, spatial awareness and the ability to learn new physical tasks quickly. Robot or mechanical experience is only a bonus there, but the role needs flexibility across shifts, including nights, and travel of up to a month at a time.
- For commercial-site and launch roles, a valid driver's license and a clean driving record. The Fleet Launch Operator posting also asks for comfort driving vans and box trucks up to 26 ft.
- No engineering degree is required for these worker roles; none of the operator or pilot postings asks for one.
Step by step
- 1
Find a worker opening on Figure's Greenhouse board
Go to Figure's careers board and look for the non-engineer titles: Humanoid Robot Operator (one posting per shift), Humanoid Robot Pilot, and the Commercial Site Team and Fleet Launch operator roles. Most are in San Jose, California; commercial-site postings name other places (in October 2026, Los Angeles and Reno). Postings open and close with headcount, so check the board itself.
- 2
Apply directly through the Greenhouse application
Submit your resume and answers on Figure's own Greenhouse job form. There is no third-party fast-track. Aggregators such as Indeed and LinkedIn copy the same postings, but the application belongs on Greenhouse.
- 3
Recruiter screen
Expect a recruiter to check the basics first: work authorization, shift availability, on-site presence at the posting's location, and whether you can handle the physical demands. Figure does not publish the details of this stage for worker roles.
- 4
Interview
Figure does not publish the interview format or scoring for its operator and pilot roles. Glassdoor reports describe a recruiter screen followed by interviews, but they lean toward engineering roles. Prepare to speak concretely about reliability, following a procedure exactly and handling repetitive physical work over full shifts.
- 5
Offer as an hourly worker
The Humanoid Robot Operator and commercial-site postings are contract-to-hire, with the stated goal of moving to full-time employment. The Humanoid Robot Pilot posting is a six-month fixed-term role paid hourly, with the chance of longer work depending on your contribution.
- 6
- 7
Run the robot or collect data on your shift
As a Humanoid Robot Operator you run the humanoid on a customer use case through your shift, find bugs, and track and escalate issues to engineering in Jira, following bring-up and shutdown procedures. As a Humanoid Robot Pilot you wear teleoperation equipment to guide the robot through set behaviors, upload the collected data and report feedback to the AI team daily. The pilot posting says strong pilots can grow into Senior Pilot and lead roles.
The Figure AI assessment
There is no public coding test or take-home. The gate is Figure's application, recruiter screen and interview. The harder bar comes after you start: operator roles are contract-to-hire and pilot roles are fixed-term, so your reliability, attendance and the quality of your work during that time decide whether you convert or are kept on. Figure does not publish the interview format or acceptance criteria for these roles.
Format
Recruiter screen and interview (structure not published for worker roles), then a two-to-three-week training period for San Jose operators and on-the-job performance during a contract-to-hire or fixed term
How to prepare
- Be specific and honest about physical stamina and shift availability. The real bar is standing and moving for 8+ hours on a fixed morning, afternoon or night shift that includes a weekend day.
- Show reliability and precision. Frame your experience around showing up on time, following procedures exactly and repeating tasks the same way.
- If you have hands-on experience with robots or troubleshooting machines, prepare examples: the operator postings list it as a requirement.
- Read the physical requirements in the posting (8+ hours standing, lifting up to 50 lbs, handling robot hardware) and be ready to speak to them honestly.
- For commercial-site or launch postings, confirm you have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
Why people get rejected
- Cannot sustain 8+ hour shifts of standing, bending, reaching and lifting robot hardware.
- Not following procedures exactly, which makes test runs or collected data unusable.
- Poor attendance or punctuality; shift coverage matters on a five-day rota with a weekend shift.
- Limited shift availability, inability to work on-site at the posting's location, or (for commercial-site and launch roles) no valid license or clean driving record.
Figure does not publish a hiring timeline for worker roles. In September 2026 Glassdoor showed an average process of about 14 days across all Figure roles, which mixes engineering and worker roles and is not a figure Figure states. After an offer, San Jose operators train for two to three weeks before working their shift alone. Openings come and go with headcount and with which sites are staffing.
Figure pays these roles by the hour, and every US posting states its base hourly rate; in October 2026 the San Jose operator postings paid the same rate on morning, afternoon and night shifts. The rates in Figure's open postings today are on this page, read from its board each day. Confirm the rate, the contract terms and the shift before accepting.
Tips to get accepted
- Apply directly on Figure's Greenhouse board, never through a third-party recruiter or a paid fast-track service. There is no legitimate shortcut into these roles.
- Sell reliability and precision above everything. Attendance, punctuality and doing the same task the same way every time are what make robot test runs and collected data usable.
- Go in physically prepared. These are 8+ hour shifts on your feet handling robot hardware, with lifts up to 50 lbs, so treat the physical requirements in the posting as real, not boilerplate.
- Pick the shift you can keep. Each San Jose operator posting is for one fixed shift (morning, afternoon or night), and all of them include a weekend shift, so apply to the one that fits your life rather than hoping to switch later.
- If you can travel, look at the Humanoid Robot Pilot role: it teleoperates the robot to collect training data and involves trips of up to a month, and its posting says strong pilots can move into Senior Pilot and lead roles.
What isn't public
- Figure does not publish the interview structure, any pre-hire assessment or the acceptance criteria for its operator and pilot roles.
- The Glassdoor interview data (about a 14-day average, as read in September 2026) covers Figure roles overall and leans toward engineering. It is context, not a description of the worker-role process.
- The criteria for converting a contract-to-hire operator to full-time, or extending a fixed-term pilot, are not published.
- Which sites hire changes with headcount. In October 2026 the worker postings were in San Jose, Los Angeles and Reno; Figure's São Paulo and Mexico City postings were for coordinators of data creators, not for the data creators themselves.
- Day-to-day details (quotas, how test runs or data are scored, injury rates) are not published by Figure for these roles.

Frequently asked questions
Is Figure AI a good place to work?
Mostly.
Is Figure AI legit?
Yes. Figure AI Inc. is a private Delaware firm in San Jose, California, founded in 2022 by CEO Brett Adcock.
Does Figure AI pay?
Yes. One of the best-funded humanoid programs; operator roles run in shifts across multiple US sites. Payouts: Hourly; operator roles are 6-month fixed-term or contract-to-hire positions. The payment schedule is not published.
How much does Figure AI pay?
Today most of Figure AI's listings pay $30–$65/hr, and the median sits at $30/hr, measured on the 10 open roles that list a rate. Posted rates go from $26/hr to $65/hr.
Is Figure AI worth it?
Figure AI pays $30–$65/hr in most of its live listings (median $30/hr). It suits people who want paid on-site shift work at a robot lab rather than flexible remote gigs. Worth knowing: Glassdoor 4.3/5 (8 reviews) · Blind 2.0/5 (1 review).
How does Figure AI pay out?
Hourly; operator roles are 6-month fixed-term or contract-to-hire positions. The payment schedule is not published.
Where is Figure AI open to workers?
On-site in the US: at Figure's San Jose, California headquarters, where most operator shifts are, and at commercial sites such as Reno, Nevada and Los Angeles. Not a work-from-home role.
What does a Figure Humanoid Robot Operator or Robot Pilot actually do?
A Humanoid Robot Operator runs the humanoid on a customer use case through the shift, finds bugs, and tracks and escalates issues to engineering in Jira. A Humanoid Robot Pilot wears teleoperation equipment to guide the robot through set behaviors, uploads the data and reports feedback to the AI team. Data like this trains Figure's Helix model, which Figure said in February 2025 was trained on about 500 hours of teleoperated behaviors.
Do I need a degree or robotics experience to work as a Figure robot operator?
No degree. The Humanoid Robot Operator shift postings list experience working with robots or troubleshooting mechanical systems as a requirement; the Humanoid Robot Pilot posting lists it only as a bonus and asks mainly for physical coordination, focus and fast learning of physical tasks.
How much does the Figure operator or pilot role pay?
These roles pay by the hour, and every US posting states its base rate; in October 2026 the San Jose operator postings paid the same rate on every shift. This page shows the rates in Figure's open postings today, read from its board each day. Confirm the rate and contract terms before accepting.
Is it on-site, and what are the shifts?
Yes, these roles are fully on-site, not remote. The San Jose operator postings run a morning (6:30 AM to 3:00 PM), afternoon (2:30 PM to 11:00 PM) or night (10:30 PM to 7:00 AM) shift, five days a week including a mandatory weekend shift. New operators train for two to three weeks at headquarters, Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, first.
How do I apply, and is there a shortcut?
Apply directly on Figure's Greenhouse board and look for Humanoid Robot Operator, Humanoid Robot Pilot or commercial-site operator roles. There is no third-party fast-track; aggregators copy the postings, but the application belongs on Greenhouse.
Can an operator or pilot role turn into something more?
Possibly. Operator roles are contract-to-hire with the stated goal of full-time employment, and the pilot posting says strong pilots can grow into Senior Pilot and other lead roles as they open. Figure does not publish the conversion criteria.
Is this the same as training AI chatbots or language models?
No. This is embodied-AI work: you run or teleoperate a humanoid robot so it learns to move and act. It has nothing to do with writing prompts, rating text or evaluating chatbots. The skills that matter are physical coordination, consistency, precision and stamina.
