Is 1X Technologies a good place to work?

Researched October 2026 · 11 sources

Mostly. 1X hires its robot operators as full-time employees with posted pay, equity and full benefits, but the pay trails local living costs, no employee rating could be read, and control of the company is in play. The job may change with the company. The Information reported in August 2026 that SoftBank was in talks to buy control of 1X at about $6 billion, after 1X raised under half of a $1 billion goal; NEO deliveries are only promised for 2026. It pays $25 to $36/hr in checked postings (stated by the employer).

Who is behind it

1X Technologies was founded in Norway in 2014 as Halodi Robotics by CEO Bernt Børnich and is based in Palo Alto, California, with operator and factory jobs posted in San Carlos and Hayward. The OpenAI Startup Fund led its 2023 round and EQT Ventures its $100 million round in January 2024. It sells the NEO home humanoid ($20,000, or $499 a month) and says its Hayward factory, with 200+ staff, began full production in April 2026.

Getting paid

Operators are full-time hourly employees, with equity offered. The swing-shift Data Collection Operator post states $28 to $36 an hour, plus medical, dental and vision cover, paid time off, a 401(k) match (100% of the first 3%, 50% of the next 2%), commuter benefits and catered lunches. It does not state shift hours or pay frequency.

Worker sentiment

Physical role: standing shifts, wearing capture equipment. (checked on jobs.ashbyhq.com, 28 Oct 2026)

Who can join

On-site at 1X's San Carlos, California facility for the operator roles; other on-site 1X roles are posted for Hayward, California. Not a work-from-home role.

What people praise

  • The benefits are full: medical, dental and vision cover, disability and life insurance, parental leave, a 401(k) match and catered lunches, with equity offered on the operator role.
  • No degree or robot experience is required: the minimum is following set procedures precisely, being at ease in VR and staying physically active; robotics experience is only preferred.
  • The role builds skills beyond driving the robot: operators annotate the data they collect, write issue reports and help improve the team's procedures and tools as it scales.

What people complain about

  • The operator post pays $28 to $36 an hour; MIT's living wage for a single adult with no children in San Mateo County, which includes San Carlos, was $38.44 when read in October 2026.
  • The physical limits are strict: operators must be 5'5" to 6'0" tall to use the VR gear, lift up to 50 lbs, wear equipment of up to 30 lbs and stay on their feet for long stretches.
  • We could not read any employee review: Glassdoor, Indeed and Comparably refused plain reads on October 29, 2026, and a Blind thread asking about 1X's pay and culture had no first-hand answer.

What has gone wrong

  • October 2025. At NEO's launch, CEO Bernt Børnich told the Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern that much of the work would at first be done by remote operators, and that buyers must accept a human seeing inside their home. 1X says these Experts are its own employees in the US and join only at times an owner schedules and accepts.
  • April 2026. After its 10,000 first-year NEOs sold out in five days, 1X answered buyers asking "Where is my NEO?": some would get one in 2026 and some later, while it scaled manufacturing and expanded home testing by its own staff. Its order page still says only that US deliveries start in 2026.
  • August 2026. Reuters relayed a report by The Information that SoftBank was in talks to buy a majority stake in 1X at about $6 billion; Reuters could not confirm it. Citing the same report, TechStartups said 1X had raised less than half of the $1 billion it sought in 2025 at a $10 billion valuation, and that terms could change.
Who it suits

Best for: People near San Carlos, California, between 5'5" and 6'0", at ease in VR and able to lift 50 lbs and stay on their feet, who want a benefited full-time hourly job with equity at a home-robot maker. Not for: Anyone outside that height range, who needs remote work or pay that covers San Mateo County living costs on one income, or who wants an independent record of how the employer treats its operators.

Honest catches

  • Pay here is stated by the employer, not measured live from a job feed, so treat it as a benchmark rather than a guaranteed rate.

How to get started on 1X Technologies

Researched September 2026

Apply to an Operator - Data Collection posting on 1X's Ashby board, pass a short recruiter and hiring-team interview (no robotics experience required), then work paid on-site shifts in San Carlos, California, operating the NEO humanoid in VR to collect and annotate training data.

Who can join

  • Able to work on-site full-time at 1X's San Carlos, California facility. The operator role is not remote: you operate robots in 1X's lab and residential-style test rooms.
  • No robotics, engineering or degree requirement. The posting's minimum requirements are about precision, stamina and fit for the VR gear; experience with robotics, AI data collection or annotation tools is listed only as preferred.
  • Comfortable working in VR and staying physically active through the shift: standing for long periods, lifting up to 50 lbs and wearing operational equipment that weighs up to 30 lbs.
  • Between 5'5" and 6'0" tall. The posting sets this range so operators can safely use the VR equipment.
  • Available for the posting's fixed shift. 1X posts operator roles by shift (in October 2026 the open one was the Swing Shift), and you apply to the shift you can work.
  • Able to follow standard operating procedures exactly and consistently, since the data is only useful when tasks are repeated the same way.

Step by step

  1. 1

Find the current Operator - Data Collection opening on 1X's Ashby board

Apply at jobs.ashbyhq.com/1x. The old 1x.recruitee.com address no longer hosts 1X's jobs (on 28 Oct 2026 it redirected to Recruitee's 'careers not hosted' page). Operator postings are listed by shift under Fleet Operations, so if the shift you can work is not open today, check back. Other on-site roles at San Carlos and Hayward (Robot Service Technician, Material Handler, assembly and test technicians) are posted on the same board.

  2. 2

Apply directly through Ashby with a resume

Submit your resume and basic details through the Ashby form for the shift you can work. No portfolio is required. Point to reliability, any hands-on, VR or gaming experience, and your availability for that exact shift.

  3. 3

    Complete a recruiter screen

Candidates report a brief, conversational screening call about availability, working on-site in San Carlos, comfort with a physical VR-based role and interest in the work. In September 2026 Robot Operator applicants on Glassdoor rated it among the easiest processes at 1X.

  4. 4

    Interview with the hiring team

A follow-up conversation with the operations team covers fit, reliability and whether you understand the day-to-day work, rather than technical knowledge. In September 2026 Glassdoor reviewers rated the Robot Operator interview's difficulty low (roughly 1 to 2.4 out of 5).

  5. 5

Accept the offer and train on the job

You join as an hourly 1X employee with benefits (medical, dental and vision cover, paid time off and a 401(k) with a company match) and learn 1X's procedures, VR rig and annotation tools before running data-collection sessions.

The 1X Technologies assessment

There is no published skills test or coding challenge for the operator role. The gate is a short interview: a recruiter screen plus a hiring-team conversation about availability, reliability and comfort with a physical, VR-based, on-site shift. The posting's minimum requirements include no robotics or technical experience.

Format

Recruiter phone/video screen followed by a hiring-manager interview. No known timed test or work-sample assessment.

How to prepare

  • Be ready to confirm you can work on-site in San Carlos, CA and keep the specific shift you applied for.
  • Show you understand the work: operating the NEO humanoid in VR to collect demonstration data, then annotating it, following procedures precisely hour after hour.
  • Have concrete examples of reliability and consistency (showing up, following instructions exactly), which is what the role screens for hardest.
  • Mention any VR, gaming, motion-capture or hands-on equipment experience, since it maps directly to the rig.
  • Check the physical requirements honestly before the interview: standing through the shift, lifting up to 50 lbs, wearing up to 30 lbs of equipment, and the 5'5" to 6'0" height range.

Why people get rejected

  • Not available for the posting's fixed shift, or unable to work on-site in San Carlos.
  • Unable to meet the physical demands or the height range for the VR equipment.
  • Signs of unreliability or difficulty following exact procedures, which undermines data quality.
  • Applying through an old recruitee link instead of the Ashby board, so the application never reaches 1X.
How long it takes

In September 2026 Glassdoor's self-reported data put 1X's average hiring process at about 12 days across roles, with Robot Operator interviews rated among the easiest. That is a rough guide from a small sample, not an official figure. Operator postings open by shift, so the wait for a suitable opening can be longer than the interview itself.

When you get paid

Operators are paid by the hour as 1X employees, and each posting states its pay range; 1X's postings also note that the role offers equity and list the benefits. The rate in 1X's open operator posting today is on this page, read from its board each day. Confirm the rate, the shift and the employment terms before accepting.

Tips to get accepted

  • Apply only on the Ashby board (jobs.ashbyhq.com/1x). Old recruitee links still turn up in search results, but that address no longer hosts 1X's jobs.
  • Watch the board for an operator listing on the shift you can work and apply as soon as it opens, since these roles cycle on and off.
  • Lead with reliability and shift availability, not technical skills. Training is provided, so what you are screened for is consistency and showing up.
  • If no operator shift suits you, other on-site roles on the same board (Robot Service Technician, Material Handler) are another way into 1X's sites.
  • If you are new to piloting robots, read our beginner guide to teleoperation and compare 1X against other labs on the RobotTraining.jobs teleoperation roles page before you interview.

What isn't public

  • 1X does not publish its interview stages, the number of rounds or an official time-to-hire for the operator role.
  • There is no published skills test or work-sample assessment for operators. The interview details here come from a small number of self-reported Glassdoor entries read in September 2026, so they are indicative, not definitive.
  • It is not confirmed whether a hands-on VR trial is part of the interview.
  • Operator postings open by shift and not always at once: in October 2026 only the Swing Shift operator posting was open, so timing is uneven.
  • Equity terms (grant size, vesting) are not disclosed in public postings.
