Is Skild AI a good place to work?
Researched October 2026 · 16 sourcesMostly. Skild AI is a richly funded robot AI company that posts pay on its US operator jobs, but $18 to $30 an hour trails local living costs, the posts name no benefits, and no employee rating could be read. The pay is low for where the work is: Pittsburgh operators get $18 to $20 an hour against MIT's $22.95 living wage there, San Mateo operators $25 to $30 against $38.44, and both are measured on the quality and quantity of data. It pays $18 to $30/hr in checked postings (stated by the employer).
Actively listing 4 open roles todaySkild AI was founded in 2023 by CEO Deepak Pathak and Abhinav Gupta and is based in Pittsburgh, with teams in California and, since February 2026, Bengaluru. It builds one AI 'brain' meant to run any robot. It raised $300 million at a $1.5 billion value in 2024 and $1.4 billion at over $14 billion in January 2026, led by SoftBank with Nvidia. In September 2026 it said it had passed $100 million in annual recurring revenue.
Operator jobs are posted on Skild's own board, with no agency named. The San Mateo post states $25 to $30 (an hourly figure, though it names no unit) for a full-time role; Pittsburgh's states $18 to $20 for at least three 8-hour shifts a week; Bengaluru's states no pay. None names benefits, shift times or pay frequency.

What people praise
- The bar to start is low: the operator posts ask for no degree or robot experience, only attention to detail, following instructions, basic technical literacy and being able to sit through repetitive tasks.
- Operator data sits at the core of the product: Skild calls teleoperation the richest form of data its model learns from, and said in January 2026 that its new funding would massively scale it up.
- It earns real money, not only research grants: Skild says it had 60+ paying customers and passed $100 million in annual recurring revenue by September 2026, ten months after its first commercial deployment.
What people complain about
- The Pittsburgh operator post pays $18 to $20 an hour; MIT's living wage for a single adult with no children in Allegheny County, which includes Pittsburgh, was $22.95 when read in October 2026.
- The San Mateo operator post pays $25 to $30 an hour; MIT's living wage for a single adult with no children in San Mateo County was $38.44 when read in October 2026.
- It is measured, repetitive work: operators must meet a bar on both the quality and quantity of the data they collect and stay seated for long stretches, and no operator post names benefits or shift times.
- We could not read any employee review: Glassdoor and Indeed refused plain reads on October 29, 2026, and the one Blind thread asking what Skild is like inside had no first-hand answer.
What has gone wrong
- January 2026. On January 12 Skild wrote that teleoperation alone cannot reach foundation-model scale and that it can teach its model new skills from human videos with under an hour of robot data. Two days later it said its $1.4 billion raise would scale teleoperation along with video, simulation and deployments.
- April 2026. Skild bought Zebra Technologies' robotics unit, formerly Fetch Robotics, after Zebra said in December 2025 it would explore options for the business. Terms were not disclosed. Skild's CEO called the Fetch team the main reason for the deal; The Robot Report noted it was unknown how many of that team remained.
- September 2026. Skild said it had passed $100 million in annual recurring revenue with 60+ paying customers, about 90% of it from manipulation work, including dual-arm robots assembling Nvidia Blackwell systems with Foxconn. The figures are Skild's own statement.
Best for: Detail-minded people in or near Pittsburgh or San Mateo who are at ease with repetitive seated work measured on output, and want an entry-level way into a leading robot AI company. Not for: Anyone who needs pay that covers local living costs on one income, wants benefits and shift times stated before applying, needs remote work, or dislikes being measured on output every shift.
Honest catches
- Pay here is stated by the employer, not measured live from a job feed, so treat it as a benchmark rather than a guaranteed rate.

How to get started on Skild AI
Researched September 2026Apply to Skild AI's on-site Robot Operator role on its Greenhouse board (skildai-careers), pick a site (San Mateo, Pittsburgh, or Bengaluru), get through a recruiter screen and interview that is really testing attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to follow procedures, then start hourly running robots through packing, insertion, and assembly tasks while hitting a data quality and quantity bar.
Who can join
- Willing to work on-site at a Skild AI operations site. Robot Operator is an in-person role posted for San Mateo CA, Pittsburgh PA, and Bengaluru (India). There is no remote option.
- Physical ability to remain seated for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
- Available for the posting's hours. The Pittsburgh posting asks for at least 3 eight-hour shifts a week; the San Mateo posting says the role is full time.
- Able to communicate clearly and follow instructions, with baseline technical literacy. No college degree or robotics background is listed as required.
- A high degree of attention to detail, the ability to learn and follow instructions for new setups and tasks quickly, and a problem-solving attitude.
- Comfortable being measured against a bar of performance on both the quality and the quantity of the data you collect.
Step by step
- 1
Choose the site you can work on-site at
Robot Operator is posted separately for San Mateo CA, Pittsburgh PA, and Bengaluru (Robot Operator - India). Each is fully in-person because you physically operate a robot at a Skild AI site, so confirm you can commute to one before you apply. Pay and some terms differ by site (see Get paid).
- 2
Apply on the official Greenhouse board
Skild AI posts and takes applications for the Robot Operator role on its own Greenhouse board, skildai-careers. Apply there directly rather than through a third-party recruiter. Copies of the posting appear on LinkedIn, Indeed and Glassdoor, but Greenhouse is where the application goes.
- 3
Submit the short application
The Greenhouse form asks for your name and email, a resume or CV and your current location (all required), with phone and LinkedIn profile optional. There is no long written questionnaire. State your real availability: Pittsburgh asks for at least 3 eight-hour shifts a week and San Mateo is full time.
- 4
Recruiter screen
Expect an initial recruiter screen that confirms location, on-site availability, shift commitment and general fit. Skild AI does not publish its screening script for operators, so treat the exact rounds as undisclosed and be ready to speak plainly about attention to detail, reliability and why the work interests you.
- 5
Interview focused on precision, reliability, and following procedure
Because the job is repeating precise operations to a measured quality and quantity bar, the interview is really testing attention to detail, the ability to learn and follow a procedure exactly, and whether you will show up for every shift. Skild AI's coding-style rounds are for its engineering roles, not operators. In September 2026 Glassdoor rated technician-level roles the easiest to interview for and engineering roles the hardest.
- 6
Offer and on-site onboarding
If hired, you are paid hourly and trained on the setups and the data quality and volume standards you will be measured against. A Glassdoor copy of the Pittsburgh posting, read in September 2026, described starting as a 1099 contractor with the chance to become a W2 employee after a short training period; the postings on Skild's own board do not say this, so confirm your classification with the recruiter.
Skild AI does not publish a time-to-hire for the Robot Operator role, so treat any range as unverified. One caution from candidate reports on Glassdoor (read September 2026): some applicants said they were strung along and then heard nothing for about 6 weeks after their last interview, so follow up and do not read silence as a rejection or an offer.
Skild AI pays operators by the hour. Each US posting states a base range for its own site, and the Bengaluru posting states none. The ranges in Skild's open postings today are on this page, read from its board each day. Confirm the rate, your classification (contractor or employee) and benefits for your site before accepting.
Tips to get accepted
- Apply directly on the Greenhouse board (skildai-careers) and pick the exact site you can reach in person. Do not apply to the San Mateo listing if you can only work in Pittsburgh, and vice versa.
- Lead with attention to detail and reliability, not credentials. No degree or robotics background is listed as required, and the role is really about following a procedure exactly and hitting quality and quantity targets.
- Confirm the pay range and your employment classification (1099 contractor or W2 employee) for your site in the recruiter call: each site's posting states its own range, and the contractor-to-W2 path is not written in every posting.
- Follow up proactively after interviews. Multiple candidates report being ghosted for weeks, so a polite check-in protects you from waiting on a decision that may not be coming.
- If you are in Bengaluru and have several years of annotation and quality-control experience, look at the Senior Master Annotator role on the same board as a higher-skill alternative to Robot Operator.
What isn't public
- Skild AI does not publish the Robot Operator interview steps, the number of rounds or whether there is a hands-on trial. The steps here are reasoned from the postings and general Glassdoor reports, not confirmed by the company.
- No time-to-hire is published, and candidate reports of multi-week silences suggest the timeline can be long and uneven.
- Employment classification is not stated consistently. A Glassdoor copy of an operator posting described a 1099-contractor-to-W2 path after a short training period, but the postings on Skild's own board do not repeat it, so confirm it directly.
- Pay for the Bengaluru (Robot Operator - India) posting is not disclosed, and no pay is published for the Senior Master Annotator role.
- The postings do not say which control equipment (handheld controllers or VR) you will use; it depends on the site and task.
- Benefits, any shift differential and shift times are not itemized in the public postings.

Frequently asked questions
Is Skild AI a good place to work?
Mostly.
Is Skild AI legit?
Yes. Skild AI was founded in 2023 by CEO Deepak Pathak and Abhinav Gupta and is based in Pittsburgh, with teams in California and, since February 2026, Bengaluru.
Does Skild AI pay?
Yes. Backed by SoftBank and others; operator roles across multiple geos. Payouts: Hourly, regular payroll. Skild AI pays operators by the hour. Each US posting states a base range for its own site, and the Bengaluru posting states none. The ranges in Skild's open postings today are on this page, read from its board each day. How much does it pay?
It pays by the hour. Each US posting states a base range for its site (the Bengaluru posting states none), and this page shows the ranges in Skild's open postings today, read from its board each day. Confirm the rate and your classification before accepting.
Can I do this remotely or from home?
No. Robot Operator is a fully on-site role at a Skild AI site in San Mateo, Pittsburgh, or Bengaluru, because you physically operate a robot. If you want remote robot-training work, other employers hire for it. See the teleoperation guide for those paths.
Is there a test or coding challenge I need to pass?
Not for the Robot Operator role. The CoderPad coding rounds some candidates report are for Skild AI's engineering positions, not operators. For operators there is no publicly documented formal test. The process screens for attention to detail, following procedure, reliability, and hitting a quality and quantity bar, most likely in the recruiter screen and interview.
What is the schedule?
It depends on the site. The Pittsburgh posting asks for at least 3 eight-hour shifts a week on-site, and the San Mateo posting says the role is full time. Exact shift times are set with the team and are not published.
