What people praise
- A Las Vegas autonomous vehicle operator (Glassdoor, November 2025) called the job straightforward once you learn it, with great benefits, paid holidays for full-time staff and four 10-hour days a week.
- Las Vegas operators on Indeed: a testing specialist (July 2024) called the work fairly simple and the pay good for the industry; another (September 2023) said the benefits beat any job in 20 years.
- NHTSA's crash file lists 12 Motional reports from June 2025 to July 2026, all with an operator in the car and 11 of them in Las Vegas. None reported an injury.
What people complain about
- Glassdoor's 15 autonomous vehicle operator reviews average 2.8/5, and 29% would recommend Motional. A Las Vegas operator of 3+ years (August 2026) said the only problem is upper management and the C-suite.
- A Las Vegas vehicle operator (Indeed, February 2026) said one mistake can end the job, and that Motional does not follow its own policies and would rather cut you than help you improve.
- A Las Vegas operator (Glassdoor, November 2025) said the work gets boring if you only drive, shifts are set by company needs, and moving to another role in your first year is hard.
- Indeed reviewers rate job security and advancement 2.2/5 and management 2.5/5. A vehicle test operator (May 2025) told less skilled workers not to bank on stories about moving up.
What has gone wrong
- May 2024. Motional paused its Uber and Lyft robotaxi rides in Las Vegas and cut about 550 jobs, around 40% of staff, after a 5% cut in March. WARN notices listed 145 jobs in Pittsburgh and 129 in Las Vegas, where remote vehicle assistance, operator and testing teams were hit. Laid-off Pittsburgh staff were on paid leave until July to September.
- October 2025. Korea JoongAng Daily reported Motional's losses had reached 2.3 trillion won by mid-2025, with its commercial launch pushed to 2026, and that consultancy Guidehouse had ranked it 15th of 20 self-driving firms, down from 5th a year earlier.
- March 2026. Motional robotaxis returned to Uber in Las Vegas with an operator behind the wheel. Motional said a fully driverless service, with no one in the vehicle, was expected to begin by the end of 2026.
Best for: Drivers in Pittsburgh (or Las Vegas, when it posts there) with 5+ years licensed and a clean 3-year record who want a full-time job with benefits, can pass a DOT physical and drug tests, and can work nights and weekends. Not for: Anyone who needs long-term job security, wants remote vehicle assistance work (none was open on October 28, 2026), or expects a quick path from driving into engineering.
Honest catches
- Pay here is stated by the employer, not measured live from a job feed, so treat it as a benchmark rather than a guaranteed rate.
