Is Zoox a good place to work?

Researched October 2026 · 26 sources

Mostly. Zoox is a well-funded Amazon robotaxi maker, but many of the people who drive, watch and support its fleet are contractors of a staffing firm such as HireArt, and their reviews cite weekend-heavy shifts and thin job security. You may well work for a staffing firm, not Zoox: at HireArt PTO starts after 90 days and holidays are not guaranteed off because Zoox runs every day, and Indeed reviewers rate Zoox's job security and advancement lowest, 1.9/5. It pays Operator pay not published.

Who is behind it

Zoox, Inc. is a self-driving company in Foster City, California, founded in 2014 by Tim Kentley-Klay and Jesse Levinson and owned by Amazon since June 2020 (a deal for over $1.2 billion); Aicha Evans has been CEO since 2019. It had about 2,200 staff in 2023. Its own robotaxi, built with no steering wheel, carries the public in Las Vegas (paid rides since August 10, 2026) and San Francisco, and in March 2026 it said it was bringing it to Austin and Miami.

Getting paid

Zoox's postings for operations team leads say they direct contractors and contingent workers. HireArt, one staffing firm it uses, employs Zoox contractors on W-2 with weekly pay, health cover after 60 days and PTO after 90. Zoox's own staff get benefits, Amazon RSUs and Zoox stock rights. Each posting states its rate.

What people praise

  • An autonomous vehicle operator (Glassdoor, June 2026, 4 stars) praised a fun workplace, a good atmosphere and great pay; the one downside named was high turnover, which costs good coworkers and managers.
  • A Los Angeles vehicle operator (Indeed, August 2026) called the work demanding but enjoyable, though they wished for PTO and said moving up is hard because drivers are in short supply.
  • Zoox's own staff report solid perks: Blind reviewers in September and October 2026 name good food, good PTO and strong benefits, and rate company culture highest, 3.5/5.

What people complain about

  • A contractor (Glassdoor, March 2026, 1 star) described exposed wires and dirty bathrooms at depots, shifts scheduled under six hours apart, and managers who report you to the staffing agency before telling you.
  • An L3 vehicle operator in San Francisco (Indeed, October 2026, 1 star) said breaks are strictly policed and weekend shifts are mandatory for at least the first six months.
  • Contract operators on Indeed (September 2025, January 2026) report little or no PTO or sick leave, depending on which staffing firm employs them, and a harsh attendance point system.
  • Blind reviewers, mostly engineers, rate management lowest, 2.8/5; an October 2026 reviewer said many early employees were promoted beyond their competence, and a July 2026 one described cronyism.

What has gone wrong

  • April 2020. When the COVID-19 shutdown halted testing, Zoox let go all of its more than 120 safety drivers, who were contractors hired through a staffing agency, saying it would bring them back as soon as possible. A WARN notice also lists 87 Zoox employees laid off in Foster City that month.
  • February 2024. A class action for California non-exempt workers, Chui v. Zoox Labs, HireArt and Aicha Evans (San Mateo Superior Court, 24-CIV-00982), alleges unpaid overtime and minimum wage, missed meal and rest breaks and late pay, and calls HireArt Zoox's labor contractor. These are allegations; we could not find the outcome.
  • July 2026. Zoox has recalled its driving software four times since March 2025: 258 vehicles after sudden braking got two test cars with safety drivers rear-ended by motorcycles, 270 after an April 2025 Las Vegas crash, 332 for lane crossings, and 105 after a robotaxi drove into a smoky fire scene in June 2026 and a remote guide backed it out.
  • July 2026. On July 30, 2026 NHTSA let Zoox charge fares in its robotaxi, which has no human controls, for up to 2,500 vehicles a year for two years, on condition that every remote operator supervising them is in the US and that it reports crashes and improper stops. Paid rides in Las Vegas began August 10.
Who it suits

Best for: Drivers with a clean record in Las Vegas, the San Francisco Bay Area or another Zoox city who can work weekends, nights and holidays, and will take a staffing firm's W-2 contract as a way into robotaxi work. Not for: Anyone who needs PTO or holidays off from the first months, wants Amazon or Zoox as the employer with stock from day one, needs fixed weekday hours, or cannot pass drug tests and a driving record check.
