Is Nuro a good place to work?

Researched October 2026 · 28 sources

Mostly. Nuro is a well-funded self-driving firm that hires operators directly as hourly employees with full benefits, but the job ends after about 12 months and operators rate it well below other staff. The job is temporary by design: you are hired for about 12 months with no promised conversion, and operators give Nuro 3.3/5 on Glassdoor (4.2 overall), citing strict metrics, high turnover and favoritism. It pays $26–$33/hr in most of its live listings (median $26/hr).

Actively hiring, pay independently measured from its live feed
Who is behind it

Nuro, Inc. is a private self-driving company in Mountain View, California, founded in 2016 by former Google self-driving engineers Jiajun Zhu (CEO) and Dave Ferguson. It has raised $2.3 billion, including a $203 million round in August 2025 at a $6 billion valuation with Uber and Nvidia. Glassdoor lists 501 to 1,000 staff. Its main program is Uber's Lucid Gravity robotaxi, which it said in June 2026 should reach Houston in mid-2027.

Getting paid

Nuro hires operators directly as temporary, full-time hourly employees (not 1099 or agency) on 12-month assignments. Each posting states its hourly rate, set by city and shift with a higher overnight rate and a weekend differential, paid every two weeks, plus a possible completion bonus, day-one health cover, lunch pay and PTO.

Fake Nuro recruiters

We found no documented scams using Nuro's name, and Nuro publishes no recruiting-fraud warning. Real openings are at nuro.ai/careers (its Greenhouse board redirects there). Nuro texts applicants only if they opt in on its application. The FTC says an unexpected job text, or any request to pay, is a scam.

What people praise

  • An operator in Houston (Glassdoor, December 2025) praised the benefits and pay, with raises and bonuses; the one downside they named was duties that never change.
  • An operator of 3+ years in Mountain View (Glassdoor, December 2025) described a supportive team, solid training, safety as the top priority and leaders open to operator feedback.
  • An AVO instructor in Santa Clara (Glassdoor, February 2025) called full-time employment with benefits a big plus; a former AVO (January 2026) said teammates and trainers went out of their way to help.

What people complain about

  • Only 47% of the operators reviewing Nuro on Glassdoor would recommend it. A former operator (October 2025) cited too many metrics counted against you, very high turnover and promotions for favorites.
  • Two recent Indeed reviews by operators (Santa Clara, August 2026; Bay Area, March 2026) describe strict, micromanaging supervisors, high turnover, and questions routed to an AI assistant, not a person.
  • An AVO instructor (Glassdoor, February 2025) said the pay is low next to other companies and there are no separate sick days, only one pooled PTO bank, though the job is hard on the body.
  • A Houston operator (Indeed, October 2023) said fatigue is common among operators and promotion feels biased; another (September 2025) faulted poor communication and no accountability from leadership.

What has gone wrong

  • May 2023. Nuro cut about 340 jobs (30% of staff), six months after cutting about 300 (20%) in November 2022. California WARN notices list 269 and 252 layoffs in Mountain View. It paused plans to ramp up commercial operations and delayed its R3 delivery robot; laid-off staff got 12 to 14 weeks of severance.
  • September 2024. Nuro dropped its plan to own and run a fleet of delivery robots and switched to licensing its self-driving software to carmakers and ride-hail firms. Its August 2025 round valued it at $6 billion, 30% below its 2021 valuation of $8.6 billion.
  • May 2026. California's DMV let Nuro test its Lucid robotaxis with no safety driver in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, and the CPUC approved passenger pilots with a safety driver. Uber rides still had safety drivers, but Nuro planned driverless testing, which takes the operator out of the car, later in 2026.
  • July 2026. Nuro filed 7 crash reports with NHTSA from June 2025 to July 2026, all for test Priuses with an operator aboard (4 in Houston). None reported an injury and most were other cars hitting Nuro's, but Nuro's own notes blame operator error in two, including a slow manual takeoff in Houston.
Who it suits

Best for: Drivers in Los Angeles or the San Francisco Bay Area with a US license held 3+ years and a near-clean record who want a benefited, full-time hourly job for a year on a fixed 8.5-hour shift. Not for: Anyone who needs a permanent or flexible job, has more than one violation point or an at-fault injury crash in 3 years or a DUI in 10 (California DMV rules), or will not accept random drug tests.

How to get started on Nuro

Researched September 2026

Apply to a specific city-and-shift Autonomous Vehicle Operator posting on Nuro's careers board, clear a screening interview, then (after a conditional offer) a criminal background check, drug test and driving-record review, and if hired you start as a temporary 12-month hourly Nuro employee who trains, passes in-vehicle and out-of-vehicle checkpoints, and then drives test vehicles in manual and autonomous mode to collect the real-road data its self-driving system learns from.

Who can join

  • Available for on-site work in one of the cities Nuro is hiring for. On 28 Oct 2026 every open operator posting was in California: San Francisco, Santa Clara and Los Angeles (Playa Vista). Openings change with headcount, so check the board for your city.
  • A current valid California driver's license, and a valid license held for the three years immediately before you apply.
  • A clean driving record: no more than one point or one non-major moving violation in the last three years, no DUI conviction or DUI suspension in the last 10 years, never at fault in an accident that caused injury or death, and able to qualify for an Autonomous Vehicle Tester license where state law requires one.
  • Able to pass a criminal background check and a drug test after a conditional offer. The California postings say applicants with arrest and conviction records are considered under the state's Fair Chance Act.
  • Available five days a week on the one fixed shift you choose when you apply. Each posting names its shifts, for example overnight 10pm to 6:30am in Santa Clara or morning 5:45am to 2:15pm in Los Angeles.
  • Physically able to sit 3 to 4 hours at a time for up to 8 hours a day in an enclosed vehicle, bend, squat and lift up to 25 pounds regularly, and tolerate a vehicle that may brake, swerve, slow or stop abruptly.
  • No degree or robotics background is required. The postings ask for safe driving, following detailed procedures, clear written and spoken communication and comfort with tools such as Slack and Google Meet.

Step by step

  1. 1

Find an Operator posting for your city and shift

Nuro lists Autonomous Vehicle Operator openings on its careers page (nuro.ai/careers). Each posting is for one city and one or more named shifts, and you pick your fixed shift when you apply, so choose the posting that matches where you live and the hours you can keep. Nuro also runs on-site hiring events, posted on the same board.

  2. 2

    Apply directly on Nuro's board

Submit your resume through the posting itself. There is no third-party fast-track and no legitimate shortcut into the role.

  3. 3

    Recruiter and screening interview

Expect a screen on the basics: shift availability, your driving history, communication and whether you can meet the physical demands. Nuro does not publish the operator interview's structure or number of rounds. In September 2026 Glassdoor showed an average process of about 23 days and a difficulty of 3.24 out of 5 across all Nuro roles, not operators specifically.

  4. 4

Background check, drug test and driving-record review

After a conditional offer you must pass a criminal background check and a drug test, and your driving record is checked against the posting's rules (points, violations, DUI history, at-fault injury accidents and three years of licensed driving).

  5. 5

Offer as a temporary 12-month hourly employee

If hired you join Nuro as a full-time hourly employee on a 12-month temporary assignment, paid every two weeks, with medical, dental and vision cover from day one, paid time off, a daily meal reimbursement and eligibility for a discretionary contract completion bonus.

  6. 6

    Training and checkpoints

You train before driving solo and must pass training checkpoints in and out of the vehicle. Operator reviews on Glassdoor, as read in September 2026, describe the first two weeks or so of Bay Area training being based in San Francisco or Santa Clara.

  7. 7

    Drive missions and collect data

On the job you drive test vehicles in manual and autonomous mode for up to eight hours a day, monitor the vehicle's systems, collect driving data with Nuro's software and give feedback to engineers, run vehicle checks before and after each shift (including washing and tire pressure), coordinate with dispatch on problems, and sometimes host ridealongs for leaders, investors and guests.

The Nuro assessment

There is no public coding test or take-home for this role. The gate is Nuro's screening interview, then, after a conditional offer, a criminal background check, a drug test and a driving-record review against the posting's rules. After you are hired, the real bar is passing training checkpoints inside and outside the vehicle before you are cleared to drive. Nuro does not publish the interview format or the checkpoint pass criteria.

Format

Screening interview (structure not published), background check and drug test after a conditional offer, then in-vehicle and out-of-vehicle training checkpoints after hire

How to prepare

  • Check your driving record against the posting before you apply: at most one point or one minor moving violation in three years, no DUI in 10 years, no at-fault injury accident, and a license held for the last three years.
  • Be ready to clear a criminal background check and a drug test.
  • Frame your experience around safe, calm, defensive driving and reacting well when a vehicle does something unexpected, since that is the core of the job.
  • Know which fixed shift and five-day schedule you can keep before the screen; you choose it when you apply.
  • Be honest about the physical demands: long seated stretches in a vehicle, lifting up to 25 pounds, and abrupt braking and swerving.

Why people get rejected

  • A driving record or license history that does not meet the posting's rules.
  • Failing the criminal background check or the drug test.
  • Not passing the in-vehicle or out-of-vehicle training checkpoints.
  • Unable to commit to a fixed five-day shift, or to work on-site in the posting's city.
  • Unable to meet the physical demands of the role.
How long it takes

Nuro does not publish a hiring timeline for operators. In September 2026 Glassdoor showed an average of about 23 days across all Nuro roles, a rough estimate rather than an operator figure. Add the time for the background check and drug test after the conditional offer, and the training period after you start. The job itself is a 12-month temporary assignment.

When you get paid

Operators are paid by the hour as Nuro employees, every two weeks. Each posting states its rate, which depends on the city and the shift (overnight pays more than day shifts), and the Bay Area postings add a weekend differential for Saturday and Sunday hours. The rates in Nuro's open postings today are on this page, read from its board each day. Confirm the rate for your shift before accepting.

Tips to get accepted

  • Apply directly on Nuro's own careers board, never through a third-party recruiter or a paid fast-track service. There is no legitimate shortcut into the role.
  • Choose the shift you can genuinely keep five days a week. You pick one fixed shift when you apply, and reliable attendance is part of what Nuro screens for.
  • Read the driving-record rules in the posting before applying. They are specific (points, minor violations, DUI history, at-fault injury accidents) and are checked after the offer.
  • Sell calm, safe, attentive driving over speed or car enthusiasm. You spend up to eight hours a day switching between manual and autonomous mode and must react safely when the vehicle brakes, swerves or stops abruptly.
  • Go in knowing it is a 12-month temporary assignment, not a permanent hire. Plan around the end date; the contract completion bonus is discretionary.

What isn't public

  • Nuro does not publish the operator interview's structure, the number of rounds, or whether there is a pre-hire driving test.
  • The about-23-day average and the 3.24 out of 5 difficulty come from Glassdoor reports across all Nuro roles, as read in September 2026, so treat them as loose estimates.
  • Nuro does not publish a single operator pay band: each posting states the rate for its city and shift.
  • No minimum age is published; the stated gate is a valid license held for the three years before you apply.
  • Nuro does not say whether the 12-month temporary assignment can turn into a permanent job.
  • Cities and shifts change with headcount: on 28 Oct 2026 every open operator posting was in California, and a city that is hiring now may stop.
  • The training checkpoints (how many, the pass criteria, where each city trains) are not published; the two-week Bay Area training detail comes from worker reviews, not from Nuro.
