Is May Mobility a good place to work?
Researched October 2026 · 14 sourcesMostly. Salaried AV operations staff get solid benefits and workers rate May about 3.5 to 3.7 out of 5, but its Minnesota in-vehicle operators are agency contractors, layoffs recur, and the company still loses money. Job security. May laid off about 13% of staff in 2024, a 2026 reviewer says cuts come every 12 to 18 months, it burned about $93 million in 2025 on $10 million of revenue, and operator jobs end when a city's service ends or goes driverless. It pays $50,000 to $55,000/yr in checked postings (stated by the employer).
Actively listing 1 open role todayMay Mobility, a private self-driving firm in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was founded in 2017; Edwin Olson is CEO. It has raised about $445 million (Toyota Ventures joined its $105 million Series D) and burned about $93 million in 2025 on $10 million of revenue. It runs Toyota Sienna rides on Lyft in Atlanta and services in Eden Prairie and Grand Rapids, Minnesota; Uber rides in Arlington, Texas are due. A Nasdaq SPAC listing agreed in September 2026 is pending.
AV Operations Specialists (a lead role over operators) are salaried May staff; postings state a range. Benefits: health cover, a 401(k) match vested at once, paid parental leave. In Minnesota, in-vehicle operators are HireArt contractors: a Feb 2026 Grand Rapids ad paid $20/hr for 2 to 3 four-hour shifts a week and listed no benefits.

What people praise
- An operations associate (Blind, June 2026, 4 stars) praised great coworkers, nice facilities, remote-friendly work and technology that keeps getting better.
- Indeed reviewers give work-life balance 4.1/5, their best score, and 81% of 21 who answered say they are satisfied with their pay; operations associates there report about $59,079 a year (19 salaries).
- A program manager (Blind, August 2026, 4 stars) described a great group of people, good culture, pay they were happy with and real room to act, even though they were later laid off.
What people complain about
- That program manager wrote that layoffs seem to come every 12 to 18 months, and that after surviving a few rounds they were let go in summer 2025.
- Job security and advancement is Indeed reviewers' lowest score for May, at 2.8/5.
- Another program manager (Blind, August 2026, 2 stars) said management has no idea how to scale against rivals; an operations associate (June 2026) cited weak support tools and shifting priorities.
- Minnesota in-vehicle operators work through HireArt, whose ads ask for weekends, a week of onsite training and a drug screen that includes THC. We found no review by an in-vehicle operator on Glassdoor, Indeed or Blind.
What has gone wrong
- February 2024. May laid off about 40 people, about 13% of staff, in February 2024. That September Michigan cut its job grant from $3 million to $1 million as May lowered its Ann Arbor hiring pledge from 300 jobs to 100 by October 2026; it then had 278 staff. A Blind reviewer says another layoff came in summer 2025.
- February 2025. Deployments change fast. In February 2025 May told TechCrunch it had stopped running in Sun City, Arizona, and the same month took the safety operator out of its Peachtree Corners, Georgia vans. Its Lyft service in Atlanta (September 2025) and the planned Uber service in Arlington start with an operator aboard; Arlington is meant to go driverless later.
- December 2025. May's reports to NHTSA name operator mistakes and what followed: a newly trained Grand Rapids, MN operator who took over and hit a curb (November 2025) and an Atlanta operator who closed a gap against training (December 2025) were both removed from the operator role.
- August 2026. May filed 20 crash reports with NHTSA for crashes from July 2025 to August 2026 (Atlanta 9, Arlington 7, Peachtree Corners 2, Eden Prairie and Grand Rapids, MN 1 each), 13 of them with another vehicle. Four list minor injuries. In January 2026 an Atlanta operator fell asleep with a hand on the wheel; the van hit a hydrant and he went to hospital.
Best for: People with a clean US driver's license and some lead experience who want a salaried, benefited start in self-driving operations, or locals near a May site who want short, steady part-time shifts through an agency. Not for: Anyone who needs a full-time, benefited in-vehicle operator job from May itself, cannot work weekends, early mornings, holidays or outdoors in all weather, or wants work that outlasts one city's deployment.
Honest catches
