Is Transdev a good place to work?

Mostly. Transdev is a large transit operator that hires robotaxi operators as hourly staff with benefits, but its autonomous vehicle operators rate it 2.5/5 on Glassdoor and a 2026 jury found it retaliated against a Waymo field worker. TAS's robotaxi work is built around Waymo, which has given fleet work in several cities to other partners; Transdev cut 83 jobs at Waymo's Texas truck hub in 2023. Staff also cite strict managers, rigid schedules and slow promotion.

, RobotTraining.jobs shows 25 Transdev jobs open, typically paying $25 to $35 an hour (median $25).

Who is behind it

Transdev Alternative Services (TAS) is the self-driving arm of Transdev's US business, which says it has tested and run Waymo's robotaxi fleets since 2019 with over 1,000 operators. Transdev, a French transit operator with about 107,000 staff in 19 countries and 2025 revenue of EUR 10.44 billion, is 66% owned by Germany's Rethmann Group and 34% by Caisse des Dépôts. Its US arm employs about 32,000.

Getting paid

What people praise

  • An autonomous vehicle operator (Glassdoor, October 2023, 4 stars) called Transdev a good place to start a career in self-driving transport, with hands-on time in the cars and some basic troubleshooting.
  • An operator (Glassdoor, June 2026, 4 stars) recommended the job to anyone who wants hands-on data collection on driverless vehicles, and said it can lead to advancement for those who stay.
  • Operators are Transdev's own staff. Before Transdev's Waymo contract in 2019, drivers came through staffing firms that capped stints at two years with six-month breaks; Bloomberg said Transdev staff can stay on.

What people complain about

  • An autonomous vehicle operator (Glassdoor, February 2024, 3 stars) found the pay good for mostly mental work, but said perks are few, schedules rigid with many weekends, and managers seem to hunt for reasons to fire.
  • An L2 operator (Glassdoor, December 2025, 3 stars) liked the pay and benefits but named no break room or bathroom access, high stress, and run-ins with members of the public who dislike self-driving cars.
  • On Glassdoor's L2 Operator page, where 22% would recommend Transdev, a March 2026 reviewer (1 star) faulted the training, the shift bidding and very inexperienced line supervisors.
  • Postings ask for early, evening, overnight and weekend shifts, overtime and recall at short notice, travel of up to a month at a time, and most of a 6 to 8 hour shift spent inside a compact car.

What has gone wrong

  • January 2023. Transdev filed a Texas WARN notice for 83 layoffs in Lancaster, effective January 30, 2023, where it staffed Waymo's self-driving truck hub, the same month Waymo cut its own staff. Waymo then shut its Waymo Via trucking program in July 2023.
  • December 2024. Waymo has spread fleet work beyond Transdev: Moove took over Phoenix fleet operations in December 2024 (and Miami later), Avis runs Dallas and Lyft's Flexdrive runs Nashville. Transdev still posts operator jobs in Dallas and Nashville, so ask which client and site you would serve.
  • September 2026. A Los Angeles federal jury found on Sept. 11 that TAS retaliated against Daniel Stein, a former roadside assistant on Waymo cars, who said he was fired after reporting that the GPS routing he had to follow led him into a street takeover. It awarded about $10.26 million, $10 million of it punitive. We could not read whether Transdev will appeal.
Who it suits

Best for: Drivers 21+ with 3+ years on the road, a near-clean record and no at-fault injury crash, in a city where Transdev runs a robotaxi fleet, who want a benefited hourly start in self-driving and can work nights and weekends. Not for: Anyone needing fixed daytime hours or every weekend off, unable to sit most of a shift in a small car or travel for weeks, or set on working for Waymo itself: Transdev employs you and Waymo can move work elsewhere.
