Is Luel legit?

Mostly. Luel is a Y Combinator startup with $31.2M in funding that pays some contributors for recordings, but its terms let it cut or reverse pay even after approval, and workers report payouts marked Paid that never arrived. The main risk is doing the work and not being paid: no rate is locked when you submit, Luel may reverse even approved payouts for any reason, and Trustpilot reviewers describe 'Paid' payouts that never landed and bans they dispute.

Who is behind it

Luel Inc. is a San Francisco startup from Y Combinator's Winter 2026 batch, founded by William Namgyal (CEO) and Inigo Lenderking (COO). It sells rights-cleared speech and video datasets to AI teams, and on May 15, 2026 announced a $31.2M seed round led by General Catalyst and Lightspeed. Its contributor page says 900,000+ contributors earn with it.

Getting paid

Each task lists its rate: on October 28, 2026 its open tasks were conversations with a partner at $7.50 to $12 an hour, paid by the minute. Approved work goes to a Luel wallet you withdraw by Venmo (US), Wise or Stripe bank transfer, in 2 to 7 business days, its help center says. Its terms fix the rate only at approval.

Who can join

Online; Luel says its contributors are in almost 100 countries. Tasks are set by language and sometimes by country, and payout methods depend on where you live (Venmo in the US). 18 and over.

Fake Luel recruiters

We found no one impersonating Luel as of October 28, 2026, but in March a Reddit post offered Luel accounts 'ready to task' for sale. Its terms bar using another person's account without permission, and one reviewer lost a $33.40 payout after a suspension for running several accounts. Joining is free: anyone asking for money to join or release pay is not Luel.

What people praise

  • On Trustpilot a US reviewer wrote on October 25, 2026 that they and a friend finished a conversation project and were paid; reviewers in Portugal and Nigeria praise regular pay and the payout method.
  • May 2026 App Store reviewers call the app easy to use, with quick payouts.
  • Each task shows its rate before you start, per minute for conversations, and its contributor page links an open Discord where it says the Luel team is active daily.

What people complain about

  • Trustpilot reviewers in Nigeria (May and June 2026) say withdrawals showed 'Paid' but no money came, one finding no transaction in Stripe and no support answer for over a week.
  • Others there report withdrawals stuck in processing, rejections with no reason given, months with no tasks, and bans for AI-generated content they say they never used.
  • In March 2026 an engineering student on Reddit's r/beermoney said Luel rejected work agreed at $15 an hour and asked them to resubmit the same files at $4.20 an hour.
  • Its terms (September 17, 2026) let Luel withhold, reverse or recover any payout, even one marked payable, for any reason or none, and take a perpetual licence to your voice and likeness.

What has gone wrong

  • March 2026. After a March 27, 2026 r/beermoney post accused Luel of a 73% retroactive pay cut, the subreddit's moderators said Luel asked them to remove it and they refused, and later that Reddit's admins found a user posting there had been targeted by inauthentic reports and vote manipulation, and lifted his ban.
  • May 2026. From late April to early June 2026, around Luel's announcement of a $31.2M seed round on May 15, a run of Trustpilot reviews from Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt and Morocco described approved payouts stuck in processing, cancelled, or shown as 'Paid' without arriving.
Who it suits

Best for: Fluent speakers of the languages it is collecting, rarer ones especially, who can record conversations with a partner and treat the pay as occasional extra money. Not for: Anyone who needs to be paid on time, anyone uneasy giving a perpetual licence to their voice and likeness, and anyone whose languages and country its tasks do not need.

Honest catches

  • Pay here is stated by the employer, not measured live from a job feed, so treat it as a benchmark rather than a guaranteed rate.
