Who is behind it

Avride Inc. builds self-driving cars and sidewalk delivery robots in Austin, Texas; its work began in 2017 inside Yandex's self-driving group. It belongs to Nasdaq-listed Nebius Group (formerly Yandex N.V.), which said in April 2026 it was seeking outside investors for it. Uber and Nebius committed up to $375 million in 2025. It cites a few hundred engineers. Its 200-plus Ioniq 5s carry Uber riders in Dallas; its robots deliver on campuses and in cities.

Getting paid

Drivers, remote assistance operators and robot technicians are contract staff of a third-party employer of record, not Avride (its driver form asks about past work through HireArt). Each posting states its hourly rate. Austin drivers get weekly pay, health cover after 60 days, a 401(k) and PTO. Indeed users report about $25 an hour.

Who can join

On-site: delivery-robot roles on US college campuses in many states, and self-driving car roles in Austin and Dallas, Texas. Not a work-from-home role.

What people praise

  • A former autonomous vehicle operator on Glassdoor (date not shown) praised the pay, the work hours and the cars, though the same review faulted management and training.
  • The Dallas robotaxi driver posting says no self-driving background is needed, offers day or evening shifts with two consecutive days off, and lists subsidized health cover, disability and life insurance and a 401(k).
  • Robot work is growing: Avride planned robots on more than 25 US campuses by the end of September 2026, taking over schools such as George Mason from Starship, which left campus delivery that year.

What people complain about

  • A former safety driver in Irving, TX (Indeed, October 2026) called the job mentally exhausting, said drivers are blamed for crashes while the system drives, and said takeovers are logged and too many upset managers.
  • All 8 Indeed reviews from Avride drivers rate it 1/5. Reviewers in Austin, Dallas and Irving (July to October 2026) describe constant hiring and firing, dismissal over small things, and managers who cannot lead people.
  • An operator in Irving, TX (Indeed, July 2026) said Avride barely trains new drivers before sending them out; the October reviewer also faulted the training given to drivers and remote assistants.
  • Glassdoor has only about 10 ratings and 35% would recommend Avride. We found no detailed reviews by robot service technicians; the one technician review, from a former contractor, gave 1/5 for poor management.

What has gone wrong

  • December 2025. Uber began Dallas rides in Avride's Ioniq 5s on December 3, 2025, with a safety operator at the wheel. Both firms said fully driverless rides would come later, with no date, and Uber said it would take over day-to-day fleet work such as cleaning, charging, maintenance and depots. Avride's remote assistance posting describes a move toward fully driverless operations.
  • April 2026. After a resident said an Avride test car ran over and killed a duck near Lake Mueller in Austin on March 31, 2026, Avride paused testing on some nearby streets and said it had given additional guidance to its safety personnel.
  • May 2026. NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation (PE26003) of Avride's self-driving system on May 6, 2026, over 16 crashes in Dallas and Austin, each with an operator in the driver's seat; videos showed cars changing lanes into others and hitting stopped cars or objects. TechCrunch found only one report of a monitor trying to intervene. Avride says it fixed the issues. No outcome found.
  • August 2026. NHTSA's crash file lists 81 Avride reports from June 2025 to August 2026, all with an operator aboard (54 in Dallas, 27 in Austin). In January 2026 in Dallas a car ran a stop sign into a robotaxi, deploying its airbags; the rider and the safety driver alleged minor injuries. In three crashes the operator had taken manual control.
Who it suits

Best for: Drivers in Austin or Dallas licensed 3+ years with no DUI in 10 years who can work early or late shifts, and hands-on people near a partner campus or city who like fixing robots, including weekend part-time work. Not for: Anyone who wants to be hired by Avride itself or needs long-term security, wants remote work, cannot lift 50 pounds (robot roles), or would be uneasy with takeovers being logged and judged.
