Is Amazon Prime Air a good place to work?
Mostly. Prime Air hires flight monitors and ground handlers as full-time hourly Amazon employees with day-one benefits, but its drones have a run of crashes and pauses, sites have closed, and few reviews come from these roles. Stability: Prime Air halted US deliveries for about two months in 2025 after test crashes, gave up its first two US sites (Lockeford, CA in 2024 and its College Station, TX building in 2025), and cut flight operations staff in 2023.

What people praise
- These are direct Amazon jobs that ask only for a high school diploma (plus an FAA Part 107 certificate for flight monitors), with a 401(k) match, mental health support and a nurse advice line from the first day.
- Full-time regular Amazon employees (30 to 40 hours a week) get medical, dental and vision cover, paid time off and free life and disability insurance, and can use Career Choice tuition help after 90 days.
- When Amazon grounded its drones from January to March 2025, it said the staff at its Tolleson, AZ and College Station, TX sites would stay on the job and be paid through the pause.
What people complain about
- A current flight monitor gave Prime Air 1 out of 5 on Indeed: it pays better than other Amazon jobs, they wrote, but overworks people, most managers lack aviation experience, and it is the same old Amazon.
- A former drone flight assistant at Amazon's Oregon test ranges told Bloomberg (April 2022) that tests ran short-handed, with crew doing two jobs at once; Amazon denied it. Over 200 staff left Prime Air in 2021.
- Across all Amazon jobs on Indeed, management and job security and advancement score lowest, 3.1/5 each, and work-life balance 3.3/5. We found no separate rating for flight monitors or ground handlers on either site.
- Worker evidence is thin: Glassdoor shows only a handful of Amazon reviews that mention Prime Air (those we saw came from a software intern and a contractor), so this review leans on news and Amazon's postings.
What has gone wrong
- October 2025. On October 1, 2025 two MK30s flew into a crane in Tolleson, AZ (FAA and NTSB probes; one person checked for smoke inhalation). Amazon resumed in two days and added visual checks for moving obstacles. Later a drone snagged a cable in Waco, TX (Nov 2025, FAA probe), hit a Richardson, TX apartment building (Feb 2026) and came down in a garden in Darlington, England (July 2026).
- January 2025. Amazon halted deliveries at its two US sites on January 17, 2025, weeks after two drones crashed at its Pendleton, OR test range (it said that was not the main reason). NTSB documents say a software update let rain fool their lidar, so they cut power in midair. The FAA approved fixes March 12. Bloomberg said the MK30 lacks an older backup landing sensor; Amazon disputes that.
- March 2025. Amazon said in March 2025 it would not renew its College Station, TX building lease past September 30, and no Prime Air worker posting we read on Oct 28, 2026 is there. It ended Lockeford, CA deliveries in 2024 and dropped its Italy plans in December 2025. In January 2023 Prime Air lost a significant number of staff in Amazon's 18,000 job cuts.
- April 2026. Cheddi Skeete, a former Prime Air flight assistant and program manager in Pendleton, OR, sued in Washington in January 2023, alleging race bias and firing for raising drone safety concerns; Amazon called it false. In April 2026 a former Amazon drone pilot sued there too, saying he was fired over safety concerns about a drone AI-training program. We found no ruling in either.
Best for: People with an FAA Part 107 certificate (flight monitors) or who like physical outdoor site work (ground handlers), who live near a Prime Air site and want a full-time Amazon job with benefits and no degree required. Not for: Anyone who needs fixed daytime hours or a site sure to stay open, cannot lift 50 pounds and work outdoors in any weather on 12-hour shifts, or will not travel to other sites or take DOT drug tests.
